Energy affordability is one of the defining challenges for utilities and customers across the United States.

The public conversation often focuses on hyperscale data centers and broad load growth. Utilities are investing in transmission and distribution expansion, wildfire mitigation, system hardening and new capacity. Much of that investment is necessary. But the costs add up.

Those pressures matter, but the story is more nuanced. Many of the constraints driving cost are hyper local, time-bound and shaped by how the distribution grid is being used.

That’s because the grid is built for moments, not averages. Peak demand may occur for a relatively small number of hours each year, yet it drives a disproportionate share of longterm infrastructure investment. Utilities must plan for those rare, high-stress periods, and customers pay for that capacity every day.
