Smart meters were first introduced in the United States in 2006, and with them came the promise of a smart energy revolution. Smart meters were going to give utilities and customers access to data that was going to make it easy to use less energy, know more about how your home uses energy, and even save customers some money.
The problem is that this didn’t happen.
Not in a meaningful enough way to drive the kind of change we were promised. But now we are on the edge, literally, of introducing the next generation of smart meters, and we can make good on those promises, and more.
We need to make a case to policymakers, regulators, utilities, and customers that smart meters deserve a second chance to fulfill the pledge they made in 2006.
