Why We Can’t Afford to Game California’s Electrification Goals

California has a long history of advancing clean energy and decarbonization, and Gov. Newsom’s California Climate Commitment is a roadmap to achieving carbon neutrality. Coupled with the Inflation Reduction Act, which offers federal support in the form of beefed up electric vehicle (EV) tax credits, $4.5 billion to install energy efficient appliances and a new tax credit that will provide up to $5,000 to build new energy efficient homes, California has momentum to accelerate widespread electrification.

But Californians will need more than electric cars and stoves to meet climate and energy savings goals. Now, more than ever before, they’ll also need tools to monitor and manage their energy use as more appliances become electrified. People will need to know what’s on, what’s running and how much energy is being used in real time.
